Senate Calls for Emergency Relief, Compensation and Restoration of Flood-Affected Communities Across Nigeria

Akpabio-Led Senate Moves to Secure Emergency Relief for Flood Victims Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Senate has called for urgent Federal Government intervention to support communities devastated by flooding and erosion, with particular attention to affected areas in Anambra, Ebonyi and Imo States.

The Senate, under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, GCON, urged relevant government agencies to provide emergency assistance to displaced families, reconstruct damaged roads, restore access to isolated communities and address the growing environmental threats to lives and livelihoods.

The resolutions followed three separate motions presented during plenary by Senators Victor Umeh, Anthony Ani and Osita Izunaso, who drew attention to the destruction of homes, farmlands, roads and other critical infrastructure caused by flooding and erosion.

Senate Demands Immediate Relief for Affected Families

Recognising the urgent humanitarian needs of affected communities, the Senate called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide emergency relief materials, including food, potable water, temporary shelter, medical supplies and other essential items.

The lawmakers expressed concern over the displacement of families and the loss of lives and livelihoods, stressing the need for timely intervention to prevent further hardship.

In Anambra State, Senator Victor Umeh highlighted the devastating consequences of flooding and erosion, including the reported deaths of at least four people, among them a pregnant woman and a six-year-old pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, Awka.

The Senate acknowledged the gravity of these losses and the need for a coordinated response that prioritises the safety and welfare of affected residents.

Rebuilding Infrastructure and Restoring Livelihoods

Beyond immediate humanitarian assistance, the Senate urged the Federal Ministry of Works to prioritise the reconstruction of roads damaged by flooding and erosion, particularly in communities where destroyed infrastructure has disrupted movement, commerce and access to essential services.

The lawmakers also called for improved drainage systems and other preventive measures to reduce the risk of recurring damage.

Recognising the impact of flooding on agricultural production and rural livelihoods, the Senate urged the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to assess damaged farmlands and livestock in Ebonyi State and provide emergency grants and appropriate compensation to affected farmers.

These interventions are intended to help affected households recover from their losses and restore economic activities in communities where farming remains a major source of livelihood.

Addressing the Root Causes of Flooding and Erosion

The Senate further called on the Federal Ministry of Environment to undertake comprehensive technical assessments of affected areas and implement sustainable flood and erosion control measures.

Particular attention was given to erosion-prone communities in Anambra, Ebonyi and Imo States, where recurring environmental challenges continue to threaten residential areas, public infrastructure and agricultural lands.

The lawmakers emphasised the importance of moving beyond temporary interventions towards lasting ecological restoration and improved environmental management.

Senate Committees Given One Month to Report

To strengthen legislative oversight and ensure appropriate follow-up, the Senate mandated its Committees on Environment, Works, Ecology and Climate Change, alongside other relevant committees, to inspect affected communities across the country.

The committees are expected to assess the extent of the damage, identify priority areas requiring intervention and submit their findings and recommendations within one month.

The exercise is intended to provide a clearer picture of the challenges facing affected communities and guide further legislative action and engagement with responsible government agencies.

A Commitment to the Welfare of Nigerians

Under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the 10th Senate continues to place emphasis on legislative interventions that address the everyday challenges confronting Nigerians.

The latest resolutions reflect the Senate’s responsibility to draw attention to urgent national concerns, advocate appropriate government responses and exercise oversight to promote accountability.

For communities affected by flooding and erosion, the immediate priorities remain the protection of lives, provision of humanitarian assistance, restoration of damaged infrastructure and recovery of lost livelihoods.

Through its resolutions and committee oversight, the Senate has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the plight of affected Nigerians receives the urgent attention it deserves.
