As Nigeria joins the global community in commemorating International Workers’ Day, Senate President Godswill Akpabio extends his heartfelt congratulations to millions of hardworking Nigerians whose daily efforts continue to sustain the strength and spirit of the nation.

For Godswill Akpabio, Workers’ Day is more than a date on the calendar, it is a moment of national reflection. It reminds us that behind every milestone we celebrate as a country lies the dedication, sacrifice, and resilience of our people.

According to Godswill Akpabio, Nigerian workers across every sector remain the driving force of national progress. From teachers shaping the minds of future leaders, to farmers ensuring food security; from healthcare professionals safeguarding lives, to artisans, traders, civil servants, and private sector employees powering the economy, these contributions are invaluable. Nigerian workers remain the backbone of democracy and the engine of development.

As President of the Senate, he remains mindful of the realities facing workers today. Rising costs of living, evolving workplace demands, and broader economic pressures continue to test the resilience of many Nigerian families. These challenges are real, and they require deliberate and sustained action.

The 10th National Assembly remains committed to advancing policies that protect the dignity of labour and improve the quality of life for Nigerian workers. Legislative efforts are focused on strengthening workers’ welfare, ensuring safer workplaces, reforming pension systems, and supporting job creation across critical sectors of the economy.

The passage of the new National Minimum Wage Act represents a significant step toward improving the standard of living for Nigerian workers. Alongside this, ongoing efforts to implement comprehensive welfare packages underscore a firm resolve to build a system that works for the people.

The critical role of organized labour in shaping national discourse is also acknowledged. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and their affiliates continue to demonstrate commitment to constructive engagement and national development. The Senate remains open to dialogue and partnership to ensure that the voices of workers are reflected in policy and legislation.

Beyond government, employers—both in the public and private sectors—are encouraged to prioritize the welfare of their workforce. A motivated and supported workforce is essential to productivity, innovation, and sustainable growth.

As Nigeria marks this year’s May Day, there is a renewed collective responsibility to build a nation where every worker is valued, protected, and empowered to thrive.

On this occasion, the courage, commitment, and patriotism of Nigerian workers at home and in the diaspora are celebrated. Their labour continues to shape the present and define the future.

Together, the journey continues toward a Nigeria where every citizen can look ahead with hope, dignity, and confidence.

Happy Workers’ Day, Nigeria.
