Godswill Akpabio: Why Nigeria Must Never Lose Faith in Its Future
As Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, we have every reason to reflect on our journey with gratitude, confidence, and hope.
The story of our nation has never been one of ease. It has been a story of perseverance. It has been a story of a people who, despite numerous challenges, have continued to move forward with courage, faith, and an unwavering belief in a better tomorrow.
Over the decades, Nigeria has endured political transitions, economic difficulties, security challenges, and public health crises. We have witnessed moments that tested our resolve as a nation and challenged our confidence in the future. Yet through it all, the Nigerian spirit has remained unbroken.
We have survived periods of political uncertainty. We have overcome devastating health emergencies, including Ebola and COVID-19. We have navigated economic turbulence and confronted threats to our peace and stability. Each challenge has left its mark, but none has diminished our determination to build a stronger nation.
That resilience remains one of Nigeria’s greatest strengths.
Today, as we celebrate another milestone in our democratic journey, it is important to acknowledge both our progress and our challenges. Gratitude should never blind us to reality, but neither should our challenges cause us to lose sight of the progress we have made.
The reality is that insecurity continues to affect some parts of our country. Communities have suffered attacks. Families have endured painful losses. Innocent citizens have experienced hardship and uncertainty. The pain of those affected by violence and criminality is real, and as a nation, we must continue to stand with them.
For every family grieving a loved one, every parent worried about the safety of their child, and every community longing for peace, the responsibility of leadership is to listen, act, and provide hope.
Hope is not the denial of difficulty.
Hope is the confidence that difficulties can be overcome.
It is easy for nations to become discouraged when challenges persist. History, however, teaches us that great nations are not defined by the obstacles they face but by how they respond to those obstacles.
Nigeria’s democratic journey itself is proof of that truth.
Twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic governance is not a small achievement. It represents nearly three decades of constitutional order, peaceful transitions, institutional growth, and the continued strengthening of democratic values. While there is still much work to be done, this milestone demonstrates the resilience of our institutions and the commitment of Nigerians to democratic governance.
As citizens, we must continue to believe in the possibilities before us. As leaders, we must continue to work tirelessly to strengthen our institutions, improve security, expand economic opportunities, and create a society where every Nigerian can thrive.
Our response to today’s challenges must be rooted in unity.
Those who seek to divide us along political, ethnic, or religious lines underestimate the enduring strength of the Nigerian people. The values that unite us are greater than the differences that sometimes separate us. Our shared aspirations for peace, security, prosperity, and progress remain stronger than the forces that seek to undermine them.
We must therefore continue to work together, support one another, and remain committed to the common good.
Faith also remains an important part of our national journey.
Throughout our history, Nigerians have consistently turned to God in moments of uncertainty, drawing strength from prayer and hope from faith. As we confront the challenges of our time, we must continue to seek divine guidance while doing our part to build the nation we desire.
Government alone cannot build the Nigeria of our dreams. Citizens, communities, institutions, businesses, faith leaders, and civil society all have a role to play. Nation-building is a shared responsibility that requires collective effort and collective commitment.
The challenges before us are real, but so too is our capacity to overcome them.
I remain confident that, working together and trusting in God, we will overcome the challenges confronting our nation. We will strengthen our democracy. We will restore peace and security to our communities. We will create greater opportunities for our young people. And we will continue building a nation that future generations will be proud to inherit.
The story of Nigeria is still being written.
Let it be a story of resilience over adversity.
Let it be a story of unity over division.
Let it be a story of hope over despair.
And let it be a story of a people who never stopped believing in the promise of their nation.
