President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has reaffirmed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, urging Nigerians to remain united and resolute as the country navigates economic reforms and pursues long-term national development.
Akpabio made the declaration in Abuja on Friday during the inauguration of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement campaign headquarters, where he called on members of the political support group to take the message of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda to communities and households across Nigeria.
Addressing the gathering, the Senate President stressed that the challenges confronting the nation must not weaken the collective determination to build a stronger and more prosperous country.
“Our difficulties must never destroy our determination, and our politics must never become greater than our patriotism,” he declared.
He commended the leadership and members of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement for their grassroots mobilisation efforts, noting that the group had extended its activities to 14 states, including communities in Sokoto and Borno.
Beyond Political Mobilisation: Listening to Nigerians
Akpabio urged members of the movement to approach their assignment as an opportunity to engage directly with Nigerians, understand their concerns and strengthen public confidence in the country’s democratic process.
He emphasised that meaningful political engagement must go beyond canvassing support to building relationships, encouraging dialogue and demonstrating genuine concern for the welfare of citizens.
“Let us move from door to door, but above all, from heart to heart,” he said.
The Senate President encouraged campaigners to listen to the experiences of market women, farmers, young people seeking employment and entrepreneurs working to sustain their businesses.
According to him, communicating government policies must go hand in hand with understanding the everyday realities of Nigerians and ensuring that their voices remain central to national development.
Akpabio Defends Tinubu’s Economic Reforms
Speaking on the direction of the Tinubu administration, Akpabio expressed confidence in the President’s economic reform programme, describing the decisions taken by the government as necessary steps towards addressing longstanding structural challenges.
He acknowledged the difficulties associated with economic reforms but maintained that sustainable national progress requires courage, patience and a commitment to long-term solutions.
Reflecting on President Tinubu’s well-known political declaration, “Emi lo kan,” meaning “it is my turn,” Akpabio said the President had brought his experience and leadership to the task of repositioning Nigeria.
He identified taxation reforms, efforts towards currency stabilisation and infrastructure development among the administration’s priorities, expressing optimism that ongoing reforms would help diversify the economy and reduce its dependence on oil revenues.
“Great nations are built by people who refuse to surrender their future to their fears,” he stated.
National Assembly Committed to Legislative Progress
The Senate President also reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to its constitutional responsibilities, particularly the enactment of laws that promote economic development, strengthen democratic institutions and improve the lives of Nigerians.
He maintained that the legislature would continue to prioritise policies and legislation capable of expanding economic opportunities, encouraging investment and securing a better future for coming generations.
Akpabio stressed that national development requires cooperation across institutions and a shared determination to place the interests of the country above narrow political considerations.
A Call for Unity Beyond Political Differences
Turning to the broader responsibilities of political mobilisation, Akpabio urged the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement to promote unity and inclusion throughout its nationwide engagements.
He cautioned against allowing political differences to deepen ethnic, religious or regional divisions, insisting that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and the willingness of its people to work towards common national goals.
The Senate President maintained that political participation should strengthen democratic values, encourage constructive engagement and inspire greater confidence in the country’s future.
“Nigeria is too precious for us to abandon, too blessed for us to succumb to despair, and too great to surrender to mediocrity,” he declared.
Reaffirming his support for President Tinubu’s re-election, Akpabio encouraged members of the movement and other support groups to sustain their grassroots engagements while promoting the administration’s vision for national renewal.
He expressed confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to overcome its challenges and prayed for continued peace, stability and prosperity across the country.
