Today, I had the profound honor of leading Nigeria’s delegation to the Vatican for the burial ceremony of His Holiness, Pope Francis. It was a deeply moving experience — one marked by solemnity, reverence, and a celebration of a life dedicated to peace, compassion, and the service of humanity.
On behalf of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the entire Nigerian people, I paid tribute to our departed Holy Father during the Lying-in-State ceremony inside the magnificent St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Standing amidst world leaders, religious figures, and believers from every corner of the earth, I was reminded of the unifying power of faith and the indelible impact that Pope Francis made on millions of lives globally, including countless Nigerians.
Pope Francis embodied a message of hope in turbulent times. His unwavering commitment to the poor, the marginalized, and the forgotten mirrored the highest ideals of leadership and moral courage. He spoke truth to power, extended a hand to the downtrodden, and consistently reminded the world that love, humility, and service are the foundations of true greatness.
As Nigerians, we cherish the values he upheld — values that resonate deeply with our culture of resilience, faith, and communal solidarity. Today’s tribute was not merely a formality; it was a heartfelt expression of our nation’s gratitude for a life well lived and a spirit that will continue to inspire generations.
In honoring Pope Francis, we also reaffirm our collective resolve to uphold the virtues he championed: justice, peace, unity, and compassion. His legacy challenges us all — leaders and citizens alike — to serve with integrity and to be bridges of hope in our respective communities.
I extend my profound condolences to the Catholic faithful across Nigeria and the world. May the gentle soul of our beloved Holy Father find eternal rest in the embrace of the Almighty.
May God bless Nigeria, and may His peace continue to guide our steps.
