Abuja, Nigeria — Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Thursday participated in the wreath-laying ceremony marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, held in Abuja to honour members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces who died in active service.

The ceremony was conducted on behalf of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, who was represented by the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima GCON. Senior government officials, military leaders, and other dignitaries were in attendance.

The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed to commemorate officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces who lost their lives in the line of duty, including those who served during the World Wars, peacekeeping missions, and ongoing internal security operations.

During the ceremony, Senate President Godswill Akpabio paid tribute to fallen personnel whose sacrifices, he noted, have contributed to the preservation of Nigeria’s unity, sovereignty, and national stability. He also acknowledged serving officers currently deployed across various operational theatres, including efforts to combat insurgency, banditry, and terrorism.

The Senate President emphasized the importance of national remembrance and institutional responsibility in supporting the Armed Forces and the families of deceased personnel. He reiterated the need for sustained commitment to the welfare of military personnel and to strengthening national security frameworks.

The event concluded with prayers in honour of fallen service members and expressions of solidarity with officers presently on active duty.
