Senate President Godswill Akpabio has again reflected on the role of divine grace in his public life, describing his rise from obscurity to national leadership as a clear demonstration of God’s favour and purpose.
Speaking at the blessing and official opening of the Regina Coeli Parish Rectory in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the Senate President said his story is proof that God lifts whom He chooses, and that no one’s background is a limitation when grace is at work.
The event, attended by senior clerics, political leaders, and dignitaries, was highlighted in a statement by his media aide, Jackson Udom.
“As the most-ranked Christian in government today, I firmly believe that God has been preparing me for the responsibilities before me,” Akpabio said. “I belong to all denominations, but I am proud to be a Catholic. Many are in the church without fully appreciating its power. My journey is simply a testimony of God’s goodness.”
He encouraged Nigerians—regardless of social status, occupation, or circumstance—to remain steadfast in their faith, stressing that the same God who elevated him can do the same for anyone.
“If God can raise me from a nobody to become Senate President, then He can do it for any Nigerian,” he said. “All we must do is prepare ourselves, remain faithful, and position our lives for His blessings.”
A Call to Support Faith-Based Work
Akpabio also underscored the spiritual significance of supporting church development efforts, explaining that even the smallest contribution attracts divine approval.
“Anytime you give—even 10 kobo—to a church project, and it is completed and put to use, know that God has accepted your offering,” he said. “Nothing is too big for God.”
A New Worship Centre for the National Assembly
In reaffirming his commitment to strengthening the spiritual life within government institutions, the Senate President announced that a new worship centre will soon be commissioned within the National Assembly complex in Abuja.
“In the coming weeks, I will invite Nigerians from all walks of life to join us in dedicating a befitting place of worship for our God,” he stated.
Commendation from the Church
The Catholic Bishop of Uyo, Most Rev. John Ayah, commended Akpabio and his wife, Dr. Unoma Akpabio, for their unwavering support for the church. He acknowledged their longstanding commitment, including hosting Catholic bishops from across Nigeria during the September episcopal gathering in Ikot Ekpene.
The Bishop further encouraged the Senate President to remain focused despite public criticism.
“You are important, and that is why they talk about you,” he said. “It is expected because of your position in today’s Nigeria.”
