Senate President Reaffirms Commitment to Economic Reforms, Democratic Governance, and National Development
President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to advancing legislative measures that support economic reforms and help ease the cost-of-living challenges facing Nigerians.
Speaking through Senator Tony Nwoye, who represented him at the 2026 Hallowmace Africa Foundation Awards in Abuja, Akpabio said the 10th Senate remains focused on strengthening democratic institutions, supporting policies that drive economic growth, and improving the welfare of all Nigerians.
He noted that the National Assembly will continue to provide the legislative framework needed to stimulate economic recovery, promote fiscal responsibility, strengthen national security, expand access to education, and advance constitutional reforms that reinforce Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
“We have sought to strengthen democratic institutions, provide legislative support for economic reforms, improve national security, expand educational opportunities, promote fiscal responsibility, and deepen the constitutional foundations of our democracy and our Republic,” he said.
The Senate President stressed that the work of the National Assembly is ultimately about serving the Nigerian people.
“The National Assembly exists not for itself, but for the Nigerian people. The 10th Senate shall continue to pursue policies that strengthen our democracy, advance national development, and improve the welfare of every Nigerian.”
Akpabio reaffirmed that under the leadership of the 10th Senate, the National Assembly remains committed to enacting legislation that supports sustainable economic growth, strengthens public institutions, and creates opportunities that improve the lives of citizens across the country.
Also speaking at the event, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, represented by Hon. Anthony Adebayo Adepoju, reiterated the House’s commitment to people-centred legislation.
According to Abbas, the House of Representatives has prioritised inclusive lawmaking by engaging citizens, civil society organisations, the private sector, traditional institutions, women, young people, and other stakeholders to ensure that legislation reflects the aspirations and needs of Nigerians.
He said the approach has strengthened the House’s legislative agenda, enhanced oversight, and reinforced transparency, accountability, and public trust in democratic governance.
