In a momentous Democracy Day ceremony held at the Eagle Square in Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR conferred the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Senator (Dr.) Godswill Obot Akpabio, the President of the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The award—one of Nigeria’s highest national honours—was presented in recognition of Akpabio’s enduring contributions to national development, legislative leadership, and democratic consolidation in Nigeria.
A Symbol of National Recognition
The GCON title, traditionally reserved for eminent statesmen and women who have rendered outstanding service to the country, cements Senator Akpabio’s legacy as a transformative leader both in the executive and legislative arms of government.
From his revolutionary tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State (2007–2015), to his current role as Senate President, Akpabio has demonstrated a deep commitment to the Nigerian project—championing reforms, advocating for peace, and strengthening democratic governance.
“This Honour Belongs to the Nigerian People”
In his brief remarks, Senator Akpabio dedicated the award to the Nigerian people, reaffirming his commitment to serving with integrity, patriotism, and unwavering faith in the unity and progress of the country.
“This recognition is not just about me. It reflects the journey of our democracy, the resilience of our institutions, and the belief that Nigeria can—and will—become greater through collective leadership and service,” Akpabio said.
Leading in a Critical Season
As Senate President, Akpabio has played a pivotal role in legislative-executive cooperation, overseeing key national debates, infrastructure-focused legislation, and supporting President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
His decoration today alongside other distinguished Nigerians underscores his position as a unifying figure in Nigeria’s evolving democratic history.
