Dear Future Nigeria, the Youth Are Ready

Godswill Akpabio & Student

In a country where over 60% of the population is under 25, Nigeria’s future depends largely on how its leaders engage and invest in young people. Few Nigerian leaders have demonstrated as consistent a commitment to youth empowerment as Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Across his political journey, from governor to senator, minister, and now Senate President, Akpabio has placed young people at the center of his vision for a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria.

As Governor of Akwa Ibom State (2007–2015), Akpabio championed free and compulsory education at primary and secondary levels, a bold and rare policy at the time. This decision dramatically improved school enrollment rates and literacy levels, opening doors of opportunity for thousands of young people who might otherwise have been left behind. Beyond education, his administration established skills acquisition centers and youth-focused programs that helped young Akwa Ibomites develop competencies in ICT, agriculture, entrepreneurship, and the creative industries.

One of the most visible symbols of his investment in youth is the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, the “Nest of Champions,” which has not only positioned Akwa Ibom as a sports destination but has also given countless young athletes a world-class platform to nurture and showcase their talents. For many young people, the stadium is more than steel and seats; it is a symbol of possibility.

After his governorship, Akpabio continued to prioritize young people in his role as Senator representing Akwa Ibom North-West. He focused on constituency projects that provided scholarships, vocational training, and startup grants to young entrepreneurs. His time as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs saw him advocate for peace and development in a region historically marked by youth restiveness, emphasizing job creation, skills training, and sustainable livelihoods as alternatives to conflict.

Now, as Senate President, Akpabio has called on young Nigerians to see themselves not just as beneficiaries of government programs but as active participants in shaping the country’s future. Under his leadership, the 10th Senate has debated bills on youth development, entrepreneurship, digital innovation, and education reform, recognizing that the challenges of the future will require a generation equipped with the right tools, skills, and values.

Beyond programs and policy, Akpabio’s leadership style itself offers lessons to the next generation. Known for his charisma, boldness, and resilience, he exemplifies a politics that is both ambitious and inclusive. He frequently emphasizes patriotism, unity, and the need for young people to reject apathy and cynicism. As he said in a recent youth engagement forum, “Nigeria’s future is not a distant dream; it is the reality we build today with the energy, creativity, and determination of our young people.”

The stakes could not be higher. With youth unemployment a persistent challenge and many young Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad, leaders who invest in the country’s youth are not just shaping individual lives; they are safeguarding the nation’s future.

Godswill Akpabio’s enduring commitment to youth empowerment stands as a call to action for political leaders across the country. By championing education, creating opportunities, and amplifying young voices, he is helping to lay the foundation for a more dynamic, resilient, and hopeful Nigeria. In doing so, Akpabio reminds us all that investing in youth is not charity, it is the most strategic investment a nation can make.
